Side Effects

Megaloblastic anaemia, pancytopenia, desquamation and bleeding may occur in GIT.
Skin reactions, alopecia, ocular irritation, arachnoiditis in intrathecal use, megaloblastic anaemia, osteoporosis, precipitation of diabetes, arthralgias.
Interstitial lung disease, leukoencephalopathy.


Maintaining remission in children with acute leukaemias.
Autoimmune diseases like rapidly progressing rheumatoid arthritis, severe psoriasis, pemphigus, myasthenia gravis, uveitis, chronic active hepatitis.

Contra Indications

Pregnancy and lactation.
Severe renal or hepatic impairment, pre-existing profound bone-marrow suppression.


Early hepatic and renal dysfunction.
CNS disturbances.
Bone marrow depression, elderly, neonates.
Use of folinic acid rescue has permitted much higher doses of methotrexate.


The cost of the drug per 1 ml is Rs.52.5 in India as of date.
