Side Effects

Impaired alertness, nervousness, tremor, insomnia, orthostatic hypotension, fatigue, ataxia, epileptiform seizures, jaundice.
change in libido, impotence, gynaecomastia, galactorrhoea.
Drowsiness, dry mouth/lips, headache, dizziness, taste disturbances, nausea, anxiety and fever.
Local reactions include burning or stinging at the site of application, pruritus/eczema flare-ups dryness/tightness of skin, paresthesia, oedema, scaling, cracking.


Topically for the short term (up to 8 days) management of moderate pruritus in patients with atopic dermatitis and lichen simplex chronicus.

Contra Indications

It is not recommended for children below twelve years.
Epilepsy, Urine retention with enlarged prostate.
Hepatic impairment.
Untreated narrow angle glaucoma.
Lactation, neonates (topical application).


Pregnancy, suicidal tendencies, may potentiate action of other CNS depressants.
Treatment with anticholinergics or sympathomimetics, concurrent electro convulsive therapy, glaucoma.
Effect of alcohol can be potentiated in patients using doxepin cream.
It should not be used ophthalmically, orally or intravaginally.
May impair ability to drive or operate machinery.
